With this new substrate, you can selectively functionalize one or both of the pores on the surface to create a modified porous substrate that is much more resistant to degradation. This modified substrate can then be reacted with a specific functionalizing reagent to create a functionalized porous substrate that is even more durable and stable.
A porous substrate is exposed to a first relative pressure of a protic solvent. This pressure is effective to one or both of hydroxylate and alkoxylate pores of the substrate's average pore diameter. The porous substrate includes a first plurality of pores having a first average pore diameter and a second plurality of pores having a second average pore diameter that is greater than the first average pore diameter. The first relative pressure is also effective to functionalize only the pores in the first average pore size range, thereby forming a modified porous substrate. Next, a first functionalizing reagent is used to functionalize one or both of hydroxylated or alkoxylated surfaces on the modified porous substrate. Finally, this functionalized substrate is reacted with another reagent that will cause it to polymerize into an article.
